We represent Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners on a variety of topics, reacting to current affairs and generating news stories the public needs to hear. Our President is available to comment on issues relating to health care, as well as for select speaking engagements.

Size and scope

  • The PEI Nurses’ Union (PEINU) was founded on September 7, 1987, after years of lobbying, the Labour Act of Prince Edward Island was amended to include Registered Nurses.
  • We represent more than 1,500 members comprised of Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners.
  • We represent all Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioner who work for Health PEI.

Organization

  • Members are organized into eight (8) Local unions that represent nurses at that particular worksite or region. These Local unions elect Local Presidents who make up the Provincial Council.
  • The Executive Council is elected by all members. The council includes the President and six (6) Vice Presidents representing acute care, community care, finance, membership services, administrative services and long term care. The PEINU’s democratic structure provides all members with voting privileges.
  • Annual General Meetings are attended by delegates once a year in Charlottetown or Summerside.
  • PEINU staff assist members with labour relations, communications, government relations, education and administration.
