New MOA on Travel Nurses – What You Need to Know
PEINU has signed a new Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) regarding the use of travel nurses. This MOA ensures that our members are given first priority for available shifts before travel nurses are contracted.
Key Points:
- Shift schedules will be posted four (4) weeks in advance (except during the Christmas period).
- Any vacant shifts will be offered to PEINU nurses first before posting the shift schedules. Vacant shifts will be offered to PEINU members in the work unit at either straight time or overtime rates as applicable (Article 20.22). This includes permanent, casual, and temporary employees.
- If no PEINU members accept the shift, Health PEI may:
- Choose not to fill the shift,
- Reassign nurses per the Collective Agreement, or
- Contract a travel nurse.
- If a travel nurse is contracted after PEINU members have had the opportunity to pick up the shift, these shifts are no longer available to PEINU members.
- Any shifts that become vacant after the schedule is posted will be filled according to the Collective Agreement, with preference given to PEINU members. Travel nurses will only be used as a last resort.
