PEI nurses at a breaking point

February 2, 2023

February 2, 2023 – Barbara Brookins, president of the PEI Nurses Union and Linda Silas, the president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions, provided the following opinion article.

Right now, nurses across Prince Edward Island are at a breaking point. We are so understaffed, if even one nurse calls in sick, entire departments can shut down and people who need care don’t get it.

In too many parts of our province, one nurse is all that is keeping your health care going. This is a constant source of psychological stress on them because they know if they can’t go into work, their colleagues will bear the burden or patients won’t get care. Yet government decision-makers seem to be so far removed from this reality on the front lines, and they just aren’t listening.
