Subject: Vacation Carry-Over
We had anticipated that we would have reverted to our normal business by now; however, the Employer recognizes that we continue to have staffing challenges with the increased demand and services required. It is still the expectation that employees are able to take vacation, where possible, to rest and recharge, in order to ensure that we are providing the best possible care to our residents, patients and clients. Additionally, there are provisions within the applicable collective agreements to which we must adhere.
As we approach the end of the 2020-2021 fiscal year, we would normally be advising employees of the applicable carryover allowances and the requirement to use excess vacation. However, based on consultation with unions, managers, executive leadership, and the fact that we continue to be in the midst of this pandemic, a decision has been made to allow employees to carry over excess vacation for the current year. There will be no forms for employees to complete; vacation banks will be updated automatically.
As noted above, I want to reiterate that employees are encouraged to use excess vacation, where possible, to ensure their well-being. We will continue to monitor this going forward, and staff should not assume that this arrangement will be in place for subsequent years.
